Ernesto Caballero
Ernesto Caballero
Born in Madrid in 1957. He graduated from the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Madrid (RESAD ā€” Royal Academy for Dramatic Arts, Madrid) in 1983, and was a founding member of the journal Teatra. He has been a lecturer in Performance at RESAD since 1991 and became associate director at the Teatro de la Abadía theatre in Madrid in 1998.
He has written the following plays: Squash (1986), Sol y Sombra (1987), Auto (1991), Retén (1991), Rezagados (1992), La última escena (1993), Vánitas (1994), Nostalgia del agua (1996), El quinteto de Calcuta (1996), Destino desierto (1996), El sastre del rey (1996), Sólo para Paquita (1997), Ministros por la cara (1997), María Sarmiento (1998), Santiago (de Cuba)... y cierra EspaƱa (1999), Un busto al cuerpo (1999), En una encantada torre (2000) (with Asun Bernárdez), Te quiero... muƱeca (2000), El retorno de Lenin (2000), Pepe el Romano (2001), Las mujeres de los futbolistas (2002), Tierra de por medio (2002), Sentido del deber (2003) and En la Roca [On the Rock] (2005).
His work as stage director includes productions of: Rosaura, el sueƱo es vida..., a free version of La vida es sueƱo by Calderón (1983); El amor enamorado by Lope de Vega (1985); Squash (1986); La ciudad, noches y pájaros by Alfonso Plou (1988); Eco y Narciso by Calderón de la Barca (1989); Querido Ramón, based on texts by Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1991); Auto (1992); Rezagados (1992); Fugadas by Ignacio del Moral (1993); La última escena (1994); Mirandolina by Carlo Goldoni (1995); Destino desierto (1996); Brecht cumple cien aƱos, based on texts by Bertold Brecht (1998); Santiago (de Cuba)... y cierra EspaƱa (1999); Un busto al cuerpo (1999); La costilla de Adán by Carmen Rico‑Godoy; Te quiero... muƱeca (2000); Las amistades peligrosas by Christopher Hampton (2001); Noches de amor efímero by Paloma Pedrero (2002); La noche del oso by Ignacio del Moral (2003) and Presas by Ignacio del Moral and Verónica Fernández (2005).
He has also won the following prizes: the José Luis Alonso prize, awarded by the Asociación de Directores de Escena [Spanish Association of Stage Directors] for his production of Eco y Narciso and the Crítica Teatral de Madrid prize for best author of the 1993‑1994 season for Auto and Rezagados.
